Early 19th century French school, - Lot 143
Early 19th century French school, The Arrest of a Suspect under the Terror Wash and graphite, annotated lower center "Bd Chevaux..." 47x59 cm (view) 60x72 cm (frame) Provenance: Collection of an Emperor Napoleon I enthusiast, near Toulon. Our drawing depicts a scene from the history of the French Revolution, and more specifically the Terror: the search or arrest of a suspect. In the background, above the hearth, we can read the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Duties of the Citizen, an ironic reference given the individual's delicate situation.
