NAPLES late 18th century, gilt enameled porcelain plate feat - Lot 109
NAPLES late 18th century, gilt enameled porcelain plate featuring the Farnese Hercules in the center. And on the rim a decoration of Roman ships and galleys (biremes or triremes), the latter taken from engravings in the work Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte (1757-1792). Gold wear Diameter: 26cm Our plate is a superb example of production from the Grand Tour period, perhaps a special commission combining ancient sculptural art and Roman maritime navigation. It is possibly attributable to the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea and could have been commissioned by an aristocratic Genoese family known for associating the Herculean theme with maritime power.
