(REVOLUTION OF 1848) L.A.S Auguste LEGALLOIS, propagandist publisher to the citizen mayor of Paris
2 p 1/2 in-4 May 23, 1848 (minor paper defects)
"I have undergone ten judgments, most of them in the Assize Court. I suffered for a long time in prison, ruining my health and putting me more than a hundred thousand francs in debt, all for press offenses. For I had made myself a propagandist publisher, fearing neither trial, nor prison, nor lawsuits of any kind..." etc... He quotes at length from his various publications "... I reappeared to continue my work under different names, and I would infallibly have succumbed to the pain, if on February 25, reading the events, I had not made a superhuman effort to set all hearts ablaze and keep the baricades at carré St. Martin (where I had taken refuge under the 2-year prison sentence) and where the revolution smoldered all day..." etc... Hoping for help, he presents himself again in the end as "... one of the most faithful and devoted defenders of republican liberty (...) and especially since the last ten years of struggle against the tyranny overthrown on February 23..."
