A pupil of Fernand Cormon, Gustave Max Stevens was initially strongly influenced by the English Pre-Raphaelites, and flourished in the Art Nouveau style that flourished in Belgium at the beginning of the 20th century. It was during a trip to Algeria and Tunisia that his painting became mingled with Orientalism and took on a more personal dimension. Our painting is a precious testimony to this pivotal period in his career. Its light, whitewashed architecture and vegetation evoke views of the Algerian and Tunisian coasts.
