Marko Celebonovic, known as Marko, is one of the most important Serbian artists of the 20th century. Born in Belgrade in 1902, he studied at Oxford before moving to Paris. He first trained as a sculptor at Antoine Bourdelle's studio at La Grande Chaumière, then began painting under the influence of Signac, Marquet and Dunoyer de Segonzac. He moved to St Tropez in 1925, and the lessons of French painting and the Provençal master Paul Cézanne are evident in his work, as well as in that of the Nabis. Marko spent the rest of his life in Saint Tropez, where he liked to entertain his Yugoslav artist friends.
