Emile OTHON FRIESZ (1879-1949) - Lot 238
Emile OTHON FRIESZ (1879-1949)
Picnic, circa 1935
Charcoal on paper signed lower left
27x35 cm
Our drawing is characteristic of the lively outdoor scenes that Othon Friesz has loved since discovering Cézanne's Bathers in 1907-1911. After the war, this singular fauve developed a very personal style and took up residence in Provence on several occasions. Our drawing also evokes the time of paid vacations and the discovery of outdoor pleasures with the Popular Front of 1936.
To be compared with a series of works from the 1930s, in particular the oil on canvas "La Sieste" in the Musée des Beaux arts de la Rochelle (cf MARTIN Robert, AITTOUARES Odile, "Othon Friesz, l'œuvre peint I", Aittouares Ed. Paris, 1995: p. 199, fig 536).
