At the end of 1992, explorer Louis Audouin Dubreuil led the first automobile crossing of the Sahara from Touggourt to Timbuktu in 23 days. The success of this rapid raid led to the creation of the first automobile track linking North Africa to Sudan, and a weekly postal service. They decided to return to Algeria, studying one of the routes planned for the future trans-Saharan railroad, and to go to Tamanrasset to meet the Tuareg. They were received by the great Akhamouk, lord of the Hoggar, and visited the love court of his sister-in-law, the poetess Dacine. In epic poems, the Tuareg lords delivered to them "the soul of the people of sail".
