Renée SINTENIS is a German artist renowned for her animal subjects. A friend of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, she successfully navigated the avant-garde Berlin of the interwar period. Born into a French Huguenot family of Jewish descent, and rebellious against the dictates of the male-dominated academy, she was persecuted by the Nazi regime from 1934 onwards. The post-war years restored her to her rightful place, and she is best known for having created the Berlinale Golden Bear trophy.
