Renée SINTENIS (1888-1965) African elephant known as "Jeune éléphant", 1926 Bronze proof with brown patina Foundry stamp H. NOACK BERLIN FRIEDENAU Monogrammed RS and numbered 25 under the right hind leg 9x13 cm Literature: BUHLMANN (Britta E.), Renée SINTENIS, Werkmonographie der Skulpturen, Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschat Darmstadt, 1987. Illustrated p. 272 as no. 220. Renée SINTENIS is a German artist renowned for her animal subjects. A friend of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, she successfully navigated the avant-garde Berlin of the interwar period. Born into a French Huguenot family of Jewish descent, and rebellious against the dictates of the male-dominated academy, she was persecuted by the Nazi regime from 1934 onwards. The post-war years restored her to her rightful place, and she is best known for having created the Berlinale Golden Bear trophy.
