James ENSOR (1860-1949) - Lot 167
James ENSOR (1860-1949) Les grandes barques or "beached boats", 2nd state, 1888 Etching on zinc without bevels on felted old Japon paper 176x237 mm Taevernier 49 Between 1887 and 1888, James Ensor engraved several harbor views near the Ostend harbor channel. These engravings reflect Ensor's study of the rendering of light on boats and the sea. A source of inspiration for the painter, the port of Ostend provided the subject for some of his most accomplished graphic compositions in etching. Another copy of this engraving is kept in the Prints and Drawings Department of the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent (MSK Gent).
