Ecole du Midi de la France, XVIIe siècle - Lot 23

Ecole du Midi de la France, XVIIe siècle Hercules and a helmeted, armored goddess, probably Athena Elements of antique furniture, added to form the uprights of a console, perhaps originally used to decorate a sideboard, dresser or armoire. Sculpture height: 72 cm Console dimensions: 85x105 cm (minor accidents, later top and base) Expert: Cabinet Laurence Fligny Haute époque Our sculptures are inspired by the iconographic types of Hercules in the skin of the Nemean lion and Athena the warrior, often represented helmeted. Hercules' muscularity can be compared with a 1989 engraving by Hendrik Goltzius depicting the demi-god in heroic nudity, armed with his club and wearing a leonté.
